So many people are spending a lot of time at home, either because they work-from-home, they are not working due to COVID19 impacting their job, or a myriad of other reasons. If you are like me you used to spend your days at work and the company provided the AC. Yea your home electric bill is up in the summer so you can keep cool on evenings and weekend, but it’s usually not too bad. This year is different and cooling costs have jumped significantly.
My office is on the third floor of a town home, it faces the sun in the afternoon, and gets hotter than the rest of the house by a lot. I am up here sweating while my family member is on the first floor in a hat and sweater. Why? Because we have a one zone AC system. It seems a waste to cool the whole house just to keep my office comfortable. I need a personal air cooler.
All over the internet there are advertisements for personal air cooling devices that promise to keep you cool for a fraction of the cost…but are they worth the money and do they live up to the hype?
It seems I cannot get on the internet without seeing at least one add for the Blaux personal AC. In a fit of optimism I got online and ordered this little AC unit for $89.00. At that price it was not too much of a gamble if it did not live up to the hype. Well, it turns out the company was fast to take my money but to this day they have never delivered the product. They don’t answer my emails, and I had to contest the charge with my credit card company. It has been almost 3 months. It seems there are several vendors for the same product so buyer beware, not all of them are reliable.
It is now coming to the end of July and it is getting to be above 95 degrees each day. I went to Amazon to find an alternate version of the personal AC. Say what you want about Amazon, they stand behind the purchases. I ordered a product simply titled “Personal Air Cooler (link below).
The site very clearly indicated that the item was out of stock but due to be in stock only 4 days from the time I ordered. Fair enough so I ordered it. The item came in exactly the day the vendor said it would. So far so good.
When I unboxed the fan I found a sturdy product that was easy to set up and operate. On the side there is a little button to open the bottom and fill with water. Plug in the fan, hit power, hit the little button that looks like a snow flake to activate the mist function and you are good to go.
As the description says, it is not good for cooling a whole room. You do need to be fairly close to feel the benefit. I keep mine in two places depending on how hot my room is. If the room is only a little warm, I keep it on my shelf about 4 feet from my desk and pointed right at me. It works pretty well at that distance.
Why do this? Desk space is limited and I don’t want to clutter up my space more than necessary. Plus this version is not USB powered and access to a wall plug is tricky in my office.
When it gets hot in my office I put it on the edge of my desk, where the cord barely reaches from the nearest plug. This is about a foot from where I am in my chair. At this distance you can feel a significant difference in temp, especially when I put a few ice chips in the water to cool it down a bit more.
I would not say this is AC quality but it is enough to cool me down and not feel like I need the whole house AC on just to keep from feeling like I am in a sauna. For $50 it was not a bad deal. I like that the fan is compact, it runs for about 4 hours on one water tank, and it is quiet.
I looked at many options before deciding on this one. Several versions have USB power and the air cooler I bought needs a wall plug. I did not notice this detail before ordering. Given the layout of my office that detail may have impacted my choice. The company did not advertise falsely, it was totally my fault for not paying closer attention.
The reason I chose this one is it had the best reviews. There are others that seemed to have a good star rating but when you look into the comments you find out that recent comments are not good and the high rated comments are actually for a different product. The company that sold my fan had good ratings, good recent comments, and provided real timeline for delivery.
If you have a few extra dollars to spend and are looking for a less expensive way to cool down this might be a good choice for you.
I am not affiliated with this vendor or Amazon and do not get any commission for this product. I purchased this fan with my own funds and am sharing in case it helps someone out there.
